Report by Kalpana Manjari Ray, Sunabeda: Nandanik, a theatre group based in Koraput, Odisha observed the National Street Theatre Day today by staging Open Air Street Drama. The first
play '*Siar Pandit Ki Kahani*' was performed by child actors of Nandanik Children's
Theatre Wing. The play is written by Sourav Gupta and directed by Monideepa
The adult artiste of Nandanik followed it up by staging three mime skits
namely, *Bipanna Saishaba, Selfie Mania & Robot. *The first skit depicts
the pressure of studies on children, the second deals with mobile phone
addiction and the third is on our dependance on machines. All the three
skits are composed through team effort and directed by Monideepa Gupta.
Speaking on the occassion, Prof Sourav Gupta, eminent playwright-director
and founder of Nandanik stressed on the importance of street theatre as an
art form which facilitates easy and warm communication with the audience.
He mentioned stalwarts like Badal Sircar in this context.
Nandanik was formed in August 2014 by a group of young theatre enthusiasts
of Koraput. It is led by Prof Sourav Gupta an eminent playwright & director
of repute who is serving as a professor in the Central University of Orissa
in Koraput. Nandanik has staged quality plays in both Hindi & Odia, runs a
regular childrens theatre wing and has successfully organised the *Deomli
Jatiya Natya Mahotsava 2016, *the first ever national level theatre
festival in Southern Odisha.
The programme was held at Chandanpokhari premises in Koraput amidst a
sizeable audience which included theatre lovers, theatre artists,
teachers, student community and common people.
